With traditional desktop management, each user is allocated a dedicated physical endpoint which is limiting IT operations as the demands of the new end user computing environment pick up steam.

The current challenges with these dedicated endpoints that you may be experiencing include:

There are typically only a few models of each type, with fixed CPU Memory and disk specifications.
You may be providing too many or too little resources, depending on the type of user and model.
These systems tend to have the same suite of installed software, and are pre-licensed even though many times, users only need a subset of those applications.
These systems are generally on a fixed refresh cycle.

Being in IT support my entire career, I have worked with many different incident management tools, all who claim to be the best in the business. However, I did not work with the ServiceNow tool until I came to GANTECH. I have to admit, even before attending their conference in Las Vegas, I am frequently impressed with ServiceNow. The beauty of ServiceNow is that it is built on a foundation around the ITIL framework, so it can be used universally throughout the industry. This makes sense, and makes things simple. It’s a no-brainer to follow the ITIL philosophy when your main Service Desk tool is the roadmap.

Many organizations are looking to move to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) based solutions to achieve common benefits such as increased security, image management, ease of operational management, and the flexibility of an endpoint agnostic solution. With traditional desktops, the compute, memory, and disk requirements are distributed across the user endpoints. With VDI solutions, you centralize those resources, which can be expensive. The capital acquisition costs can far outweigh the operational benefits achieved.

After reading Walter Isaacson’s book, Steve Jobs, my quest to get to Silicon Valley sometime in my life moved up on my bucket list. If you haven’t read the book, and you enjoy technology, it’s a definite must- read. Jobs’ life was a who’s who in the technology field; from Atari, to HP, to Xerox PARC, to Microsoft, and of course Apple and Pixar, he led quite the life! I took many valuable lessons from the book, both personally and professionally.

“Technology has finally caught up with the promises we talked about for so long”

– Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, speaking about the current state of smart phones.

The mobile sector is growing far faster than industry leaders could have predicted. Cisco says in 2011, “mobile data more than doubled for the fourth year in a row. In that same time, tablet and smart phone usage has tripled.” Employee devices are already on our company’s networks, regardless of if they are wanted. When your network is in users’ pockets, your network is where users are located. The last dead zones will soon be covered and much to the delight of management, employees aren’t happy when they can’t work wherever they are located. On the flip side, employees’ personal lives and data choices are infiltrating the once-guarded fortress of the company enterprise.

Before the mobile revolution, the thought of data walking out the door would be a worst case scenario. Now, IT is starting to realize that since the data is going out anyway, it may as well be protected. This presents a massive challenge to management, as the cost of accommodating this behavior while still presenting a strong security posture is substantial. Mobile device management is not only risky, it is incredibly complex. Mobile has so many platforms and versions; gone are the days of one flavor of Windows across the board.
