We recently had an opportunity to partner with a large Midwestern University to collaboratively design and implement a “digital lab” solution for two new online courses the University was delivering. The University chose to use VMware’s Horizon Air Desktops and vCloud Air for infrastructure for rapid deployment, scalability, and a premium experience. One particular challenge was that the solution had to be online within six weeks. If the solution were successful, Horizon Air Desktops and vCloud Air could become a larger part of the University offering to all students, not only for these two online courses. VMware brought GANTECH to the University as the EUC Elite Partner of choice.

Recently, a client wanted to implement Horizon View for their workforce and use their existing Cisco ASA Web SSL VPN to provide access to the desktops. That’s not an unreasonable constraint; they have an existing investment and a system that works, and they don’t want to throw that away. The end users like the capability to connect using a web browser and set up a secure connection to internal resources and use of the AnyConnect client was a non-starter, politically.

There is a revolution underway that has the potential to be staggeringly transformational and, at the same time, highly disruptive; it is currently called the Internet of Things (IoT) trend. IoT (also referred to as “Internet of Everything”) devices have embedded network, computing and other information processing capabilities, which allow these devices to be interconnected. The number and types of devices that are being manufactured with these built-in IoT features are increasing rapidly. It is imperative to take notice of the IoT trend because it has a strong potential to redefine the Security risk equation within many enterprises.View Full Post

GANTECH’s Eric Spiegel, vice president of EUC Solutions, previewed our EUC deployment for Seventy Seven Energy (77NRG) in an earlier post and now we’d like to share 77NRG team’s perspective of the project.

As a quick recap, Seventy Seven Energy (NYSE: SSE) is a diversified oilfield services company that has 3,500 employees distributed throughout the country. With the majority of its employees – approximately 2,500 – in the field and outside of a traditional workplace environment, the company needed a solution that gave their employees the freedom and security to access their PC and applications from any location and at any time. 77NRG selected VMware Horizon Air as the portal to host its virtual PCs.View Full Post

If you’re a CIO or CTO working in healthcare you may be managing a traditional desktop environment. I’m sure you’re quickly realizing you need a simplified desktop management strategy with increased control of your corporate assets and improved security of end-user data. This year, GANTECH has been involved with VMware in a number of Horizon Air deployments. It is a very exciting opportunity to help drive adoption and make our customers successful in their EUC roadmaps. The Horizon Air platform is continuously maturing, providing new features to simplify the delivery of desktops and applications. As more and more VMware customers are evaluating Desktop as a Service (DaaS), my recommendation is to start at the beginning. Sometimes, you just need to go back to the basics. All virtual desktop projects should begin with an assessment of the existing environment to provide you the information needed to plan the right solution.View Full Post

I was shocked to see a recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies that stated damages due to hacking are greater than $300 billion each year. Threats to enterprise information security have escalated to entirely new levels, and those responsible for IT security need to elevate their game to avoid becoming the next headline story. The good news is that there are revolutionary technologies available to protect your organization and mitigate potential damage.  View Full Post

There were a lot of new updates to the Horizon Air platform announced around VMworld this year; Expansion into Canada, the Client for Chrome OS, HTML access for RDSH, the helpdesk portal, Access point and a new Interface (coming soon). These are all great features that bring the Horizon Air platform together to deliver what you expect from VMware. These updates are about the user experience as well as the IT Admin; a rich feature set that allows the user to do what they need, while also providing the IT Admin with a simpler mechanism to support those users.View Full Post

Throughout my time working in the View and Horizon portfolios, there has always been one driving factor for every deployment: the desktop. From handling the intense I/O of boot storms, to abstracting every element to achieve a non-persistent environment, to licensing of the Windows OS and applications, it’s all about the desktop. That probably isn’t going away, at least any time soon, but new additions to the Horizon and AirWatch suites are creating options that can allow us to ask “Is a desktop needed?”View Full Post
